The two calla lily bulb images above are
of genetically identical Z. Rehmannii Superba. The only difference between
the two is just one additional harvest and plant-back cycle. This means
that the two-year-old Callafornia Calla® bulb on the left has adolescent
vigor, but the three-year-old bulb on the right does not.
Only young, T2 vegetative material can come
close to the vigor of F1 hybrid Callafornia Calla®,
but most of these descend from the apically dominant and soft-rot susceptible
Z. Elliotiana types. The multi-eyed genetics of Z. Rehmannii blood lines
have, on the other hand, been incorporated into all Callafornia Calla®
pot lines and also into many cut-suitable lines. Varieties Hybrid Yellow
and Flame are the notable exceptions. |
